It seemed like this fall, the Restaurant Deep State that decides which kinds of restaurants will flood Miami chose steakhouses. I literally lost count of how many I went to, and while they were all pretty good, I found one jammed into a Kendall strip mall that outshined them all. No, it didn’t have celebrity guests or a buildout that could double as a Disney ride. But it did have high-quality, fire-grilled meat, a spectacular burger, and the kind of service that makes you feel like you’ve been going there for years.
Meet Che Tito’s, where even at lunchtime on a Friday the tables were packed with hungry Kendallites who seemed in on a secret the rest of Miami was missing. The Argentine steakhouse has been run by the same family since it opened 30 years ago, the daughter buying out her father a few years back. And if you love good meat and friendly prices, it’s absolutely worth the drive.
What to eat: If you know even a smidge about Argentine food, you know you’re going for the steak. And Che Tito’s does it exquisitely, preparing each steak over a wood-fired flame that gives every cut a unique flavor. Churrasco and picanha are Che Tito’s specialties and among its more affordable options. Cover them with the garlic-forward chimichurri and you’ll swear you were dining on red couches at the Faena.
The burger is also a low-key star, as Tito’s puts some actual thought into its patties as opposed just wantonly smashing them on a grill, The flame broiled meat comes seasoned with garlic, pepper, and some other flavors, and packs enough heft that you’ll probably have leftovers. It’s leaps and bounds better than most burger spots I’ve been to in Miami, and could rival Flannigan’s for best in the city.
Speaking of Flanny’s, the garlic rolls at Che Tito’s are also top notch and could give the Green Cup Mafia a run for its money.
The space: Is a narrow, wood-lined hole-in-the-mall wedged into a corner of the Kendall Gate shopping center. The place has been around for 30 years, and tables are filled with people who look like they’ve been coming here since it opened. Photos of Buenos Aires hang over the bar, and chances are there’ll be some kind of soccer on TV. You’ll find regulars hanging at the bar enjoying the impressive Argentine wine list, too. And the owner - who also waits tables - seemingly knows everybody.
Don’t miss: The lunch specials. You can get an 8 oz. steak for $16.99, Milanese for $15.99, and a burger with fries for $12.99.
Perfect for: An affordable and filling dinner out, lunch if you happen to be in Kendall
Expect to pay: Under $30-40 per person, a little over $50 if you partake in the Argentine wine selection.
How’s the parking: If you can’t find a space at the Kendall Gate shopping center, that’s on you, boo.
