The Old Favorite With a New Address
That upstairs bar at Sra. Martinez may be gone, but the croquetas are still worth fighting for
James Beard Award-winning chef Michelle Bernstein and her partner in business and love, David Martinez, have brought their Spanish spot Sra. Martinez back to life in a sprawling Coral Gables space. The new digs trade the old post office charm for art deco glam—think pink and green terrazzo floors, marble sconces, and waiters in pink tuxedo jackets.
Is it as good as the original?
I spent many nights at the Design District location's upstairs bar, and while that intimate space can't be replicated, this new spot brings its own charm. The wood-burning oven is firing up some serious flavors, and the packed dining room proves Miami hasn't forgotten what made the first one special.
What to Eat & Drink: Start with those carbonara croquetas - they come topped with cured egg yolk and Pecorino that'll make you want to order a second round. The oxtail paella with melting bone marrow is pure comfort, and if you see the whole fire-roasted fish with chermoula sauce, grab it. The Greek-ish salad with whipped feta and crispy pita is a sleeper hit. Skip the martini service (no tableside prep here, even though the name alludes otherwise) and go for their house Sangria which has spiced cordial and Lambrusco.
Don't Miss: Live music on Friday and Saturday nights (soon expanding to Thursdays and Sundays). The bands play at just the right volume - you can still chat without shouting.
Perfect For: Double dates (I saw tons while there), catching up with friends who don't mind a lively scene, or showing off Miami's dining chops to out-of-towners. The crowd skews mid-30s and up.
Expect to Pay: $75-150 per person for dinner with drinks.
How's the parking? Classic Coral Gables – tricky street parking but plenty of public lots nearby. $12 valet available.
