Pari Pari - The Hand Roll Haven
Not even a self-diagnosed parasite could keep me away from Yasu's latest yet casual greatest.
Traveling between Miami and India can do a number on the gut. But that didn’t stop me from heading over to enjoy Chef Yasu’s new spot a few weeks back for one of the most lovely lunches I’ve enjoyed in ages.
Still dreaming of their crunchy seaweed that subtly held every roll together impeccably, from the moment we entered Pari Pari, we knew it was where we belonged. Hand-rolls and a bottle of sake between my girlfriend Leslie and I was just what the doctor ordered. Between the elevated level of chic to the playlist (OMG, it’s on par with Aoko’s), to their sake collection (they have IWA at a slightly discounted rate), Pari Pari provides a non-fussy menu where everything was outstanding. The roll-masters behind the bar danced while they served us which is SO up my alley. And although the sashimi dishes melted on my tongue, TBH, it was worth skipping.
Located down an alley, it may be Wynwood’s best kept secret. After all, who doesn’t love a 25-seat hand-roll bar; especially one by Chef Yasu Tanaka. He’s a legend and I have been a client of his since he was South of 5th at the Hilton at Azabu way back when.
Is it still worth the hype?: Hell yes! It’s more under the radar than hype, but I did run into two friends at the sushi bar.
The Space: It’s cool AF. Modern and sophisticated, it reminded me of a day-time version of Dante’s Hifi. Don’t ask me why.
What to Eat & Drink: The hand-rolls. The crab one blew my mind, and that’s not easy to do. As did the scallop and cucumber. While the Uni had me at hello after its refrigerated flight from Japan, the toro caviar was simply divine. Truth be told: they are all equally delicious.
Perfect For: Lunch with a girlfriend, or ideal to enjoy for a casual lunch with your lover.
Pro Tips: It’s way easier to snag a reservation here than at Boia De and the same caliber of team creating your meal.
Expect to Pay: They have prix fixe options for under 30 dollars or if you ala carte like me - around 70. Plus, sake!
How’s the parking? Not bad. There is street parking everywhere - it’s Wynwood, so it’s not difficult to navigate.
