Old Miami x The Leftovers - Ep. 1: Flanigan's Coconut Grove
Because consistency, cheese sticks, green cups and a jukebox are king
Editor’s Note: Welcome to our first official The Leftovers Miami Collaboration piece that’s brought to you by a set of brilliant cousins who just so happen to be Miami natives. Erin Michelle Newberg - Co-founder of The Leftovers and Danielle Payton - Founder of Old Miami realized their collective videos were developing traction courtesy of their humor, style and unfiltered grace, so they decided to merge minds and get down and dirty to bring you OG Old Miami content with a F&B twist.
Welcome to Flanigan’s in Coconut Grove. “It has been part of my life for as long as I can remember,” explains Payton.
“When my grandparents made the move from snowbirds to full-time Miami residents in the ‘70s, my grandfather found his spot,” she recalls, “and every Wednesday night, like clockwork, it was Flanigan’s. No debating where to go. No reservations. No trends. Just Wednesday at Flanny’s.”
As a kid, those dinners became part of her very own Miami story. Looking back, she remembers “the green cups and the familiar booths…it was a feeling that no matter how much the city changed outside, some places never needed to!”
And that’s what she loves most about it. Danielle explains, “it’s low-key and it’s unpretentious.” It’s also the kind of place where you’ll see a family celebrating a birthday, a group of friends watching the game, and someone still wearing flip-flops from the beach.
She has even brought dates there, “and if someone’s turned off by Flanigan’s - well, that’s usually my sign we’re probably not a match.”
Because Flanigan’s isn’t trying to impress anyone, The Leftovers and Old Miami want you to understand that it doesn’t have to. It’s one of those rare places that has earned its place in Miami culture simply by being exactly what it is.
To us, it’s as local as local gets.
XO-
Danielle and Erin
