Intriguing Indian Food You've Driven By 100 Times
If you've played rec-league softball, you've seen this place.
You know a restaurant is gonna be great when they serve lunch on Super Bowl plates. It says, “Rather than waste money on things like ‘décor’ and ‘reusable dishware,’ we’re putting all our budget into the food.” This point was driven home when I found myself eating tandoori momos off Dixie plates that said “Big Game” at Bombay Corner. It’s one of those places you drive by 700 times without ever knowing it’s there, right across SW 22nd Ave from Shenandoah Park.
Then you try the food. And then you never forget it.
The restaurant’s been around for about seven years, dealing almost exclusively in take-out and delivery. But you’ll find a smattering of small banquet tables and a frat house sofa inside. Dining in is so rare the only plates they have to serve you on look like they were leftovers from a 9th birthday party. But the food is that kind of stripped-down, we’re-not-here-for-the-ambience-we’re-here-for-vindaloo stuff that’ll instantly put it in your delivery rotation.
So why is this better than every other Indian restaurant on my delivery app?
Because the food leans more creative than most. Yes, white people, you can still order mild chicken tikka masala and saag paneer. But god forbid you feel like branching out, you’ll find a big menu of dishes that aren’t on most Indian menus, including some of our sit-down favorites. But every dish travels well, so if you get it delivered you’re not going to lose much of the experience.
What to eat/drink: Again, I encourage you to try and branch out from your usual butter chicken. The mango chicken curry is a nice segway, and you can tell it’s made with fresh mangos – probably from someone’s tree within a couple blocks. The menu of Indo-Chinse food is intriguing, and the Gobi Manchurian is one of the better crispy cauliflower dishes I’ve had. The coolest thing on the menu, though, are the tandoori momos, chicken dumplings fired in a Tandoori oven that take on the smoky, spicy flavor. They put anything at your neighborhood dumpling shop to shame. Finish off with one of their house-made mango lassis, a cool yougurty finish to a spicy meal.
The space: Ain’t much. If you’re like me and have a moral objection to food delivery, you can eat at one of the small tables. The guy working the takeout window might look at you funny, and he might bag eight to-go orders before he gets to your table. But I’ll just chalk that up to “charm.”
Don’t miss: The tandoori momos. Seriously unlike anything you’ve seen before.
Perfect for: Delivery lunch or dinner when cooking isn’t happening. Hosting big groups.
Expect to pay: A decent dinner order for two should be about $50. Pick it up if you don’t want to deal with delivery fees.
How’s the parking: Easy street parking all around.
