The team behind downtown's Vietnamese hit Tâm Tâm has joined forces with chef Adrian Ochoa to launch Double Luck Club in Shorecrest. This Thursday-to-Sunday pop-up in the old New Schnitzel House space brings both approachable and authentic Chinese cooking to a neighborhood ready for something fresh.
Is it worth the hype?
Yes, and then some. Double Luck manages what few restaurants do: making traditional Chinese dishes accessible without dumbing them down. The room buzzes with conversation while servers carry out steaming platters meant for sharing. You'll recognize some dishes from your usual takeout order, but they're done with more care, better ingredients, and thoughtful twists.
The Space: They haven't completely erased New Schnitzel House from the picture. The layout remains intact with Chinese lanterns hanging overhead and new artwork on walls. It feels like exactly what it is - a pop-up finding its voice. The dining room is simple but functional, with the bathroom surprisingly becoming a mini art gallery worth checking out. Nothing fancy, but it works for now, and hints at bigger things if they put down permanent roots.
What to Eat & Drink: The Crab Leg Rangoons stand out immediately - actual crab claw handles jut from crispy wrappers filled with real crab meat and cream cheese. They're fun to eat and even better to dunk in house-made sweet and sour sauce. The Cold Mushroom Salad surprises with its substantial texture and savory depth. Even if you normally pass on mushrooms, this dish with its red chili flakes and fish sauce notes might change your mind. Hennessy Orange Chicken arrives with tableside flames that draw stares from across the room. Once the show ends, you're left with juicy chicken in a sauce that balances booze, citrus, and sweetness.
Drink options currently include beer and wine curated by Harrison Ramhofer, with plans for Chinese wines and sake options. If they transition from pop-up to permanent, expect cocktails incorporating Chinese ingredients.
Perfect For: Friend groups who love to share plates. The family-style portions work best when you can try multiple dishes.
Pro Tips: Avoid the duck appetizer if cilantro tastes like soap to you (it's basically a cilantro salad).
Expect to Pay: : $40-60 per person including drinks.
How's the parking? There's a free parking lot behind the restaurant, though spaces are limited and it gets tight. On busy nights, you might circle a while before finding street parking along 79th Street. Save yourself the hassle during peak hours and grab a rideshare instead.
